Care Home Manager Angela

Care home manager Angela has nearly 40 years experience as a registered nurse and carer. Her wealth of experience and passion for the care industry, alongside an ability to ensure safety, comfort and happiness for residents and staff mean that Elm House has one of the best people in the industry to steer the ship!

 

 

What makes Elm House different to other care homes?

Elm House is a beautiful state of the art, modern but homely residential care facility with the ability to offer our clients a complete individualised care package promoting independence and dignity and is delivered with the utmost respect to our clients. All care needs are catered for and the individual wishes of our clients will be met from a team of highly motivated dedicated staff.

What initially attracted you to the care sector?

I started my career in nursing in 1978, caring for people is the only career i ever wanted to pursue and over the past 38 years of my work for NHS, and private health care sector it has given me the most satisfying job i could wish for. Being a qualified nurse and obtaining many years of experience has enabled me personally to develop my skills to promote and deliver excellent care to every resident that I will be responsible for in my role as registered manager.

What are your day to day duties?

I As a registered manager my day to day duties are as follows:


1. Compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements.
 

2. Maintenance of Quality Management System.
 

3. Maintain occupancy levels.
 

4. Maintain budgetary control.
 

5. Welfare of residents.
 

6. Recruitment & retention of staff.
 

7. Training & development of staff.
 

8. Health & Safety in the workplace.
 

9. Overall clinical responsibility.
 

10. Oversee all paper work documentation.

a) Maintain an overall knowledge of all matters relating to residents’ health and social care.


b) Maintain on-going personal contact with residents and their relatives.

 

c) Ensure that the rights of each resident are acknowledged and protected.

 

d) Supervise the nutritional balance of the residents’ diets in conjunction with the chef.


a) Monitor residents’ care outcomes and ensure CQC quality standards are maintained.


b) Respond to compliments & complaints in appropriate and timely manner.

 

c) Undertake self-assessment when required.


d) Use feedback from customer surveys for continual improvement and ensure the smooth running of the home is adhered to.

What do you find challenging about your role?

The challenge that i find a must ensure that my residents and my staff are happy and safe in the environment in which they live and work and their needs are met in full.

Being in a position to implement positive change to enhance the quality of peoples lives.

How do you and your staff work together as a team

to care for the residents?

Communication is key, input from all staff with regards to personal independent care planning is so important. ensuring all staff are fully aware of our residents needs, continuity of care from all staff members,  maintaining staff training both mandatory and extra training as needed, regular staff meetings and residents meetings relatives meetings, staff supervisions and appraisals to be completed by myself to ensure all staff are comfortable within their role and raise any issues on a one to one basis with myself.

What do you like about the care home’s location?

Elm House is in the lovely residential area of Old Skelmersdale close to essential amenities such as GP surgeries , pharmacy, post office, the local park and bowling greens which will enable our residents to remain part of the community within which they are living.

What sort of person do you need to be to

work in the care sector?

You have to be a caring compassionate, loyal, trustworthy human being dedicated to wanting to help and support others.

Do the staff have any special qualifications?

Most of our staff have undertaken NVQ level 3 and above with a vast amount of experience of working with elderly vulnerable adults, all staff will have mandatory training induction training of two weeks prior to commencement of role and their training matrix will be ongoing. Some of our staff have training in further fields such as end of life care, and dementia care and I will support any staff development to the highest level to ensure all of my staff have the training they require and wish to undertake.
